Bananas

The world loves bananas. In 2020, global exports reached an estimated 20.2 million metric tonnes—making bananas one of the world’s most important food crops. Back in the early 1990s, in the first years of the Rainforest Alliance, we made it a priority to transform an industry that was once synonymous with worker abuse, rampant deforestation, and the ruin of streams, rivers, and coral reefs.

This page features information about the Rainforest Alliance's work in bananas and links to all our banana-related content and resources.

The Rainforest Alliance has been a catalyst for the farm’s sustainability journey, since our certification program has promoted better practices across the sector at large. We work with farmers and companies in the coffee supply chain, governments, civil society, and millions of individuals to protect forests and biodiversity, act on climate change, and promote the rights and improve the livelihoods of rural people. Together we can change the way the world produces and consumes bananas and create a world where people and nature thrive together.
